Hazardous Waste

007What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is any liquid or solid containing chemicals, pathogens, heavy metals, or other toxins. These materials can be harmful to humans, plants, and animals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a federally regulated organization that oversees and enforces strict guidelines for proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste. Improper disposal and illegal dumping can result in heavy fines, as well as harmful long-term effects on the environment. By helping all within our networking reach to understand the importance of proper waste disposal, we hope to play a role in assisting the Austin City Council’s goal of becoming a zero waste city by the year 2040. The Austin Resource Recovery Master Plan, aims to keep at least 90% of discarded materials out of the landfills before the aforementioned deadline, and doing our part can be integral in achieving this goal.

Although Get it Gone does not accept or haul away hazardous waste and chemicals, we are very conscious that these sensitive materials need to be recycled and disposed of appropriately. Hazardous waste can be extremely harmful to the environment if not taken care of responsibly. These harsh chemicals can end up contaminating the ground water, and ultimately, our drinking water, causing illness and other devastating outcomes. It is our commitment to proper recycling that drives us to further educate ourselves and others on established hazardous waste disposal methods. Listed below are a few tips, tricks and links to help you get the ball rolling on properly disposing your hazardous materials. Constructive feed back and suggestions are always welcomed here!
